Seven runners for UAE President’s Cup in Moscow
Seven of Russia’s top 4-year-old Purebred Arabian race horses will run in the Emirates Equestrian Federation’s HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby to be staged on Saturday, August 15, 2009. The Moscow Derby, which carries a prize money of 7,55,000 Russian Roubles, along with the Abu Dhabi Stakes, also for Purebred Arabians, completes a strong presence of the UAE in this important race day in Moscow. The two races, supported by the Emirates Equestrian Federation, are part of the Emirates Equestrian Federation’s HH The President of the UAE Cup series, which is currently making its fourth stop in Europe after Chantilly in France and Newmarket and Ascot in the United Kingdom. Leading the field of seven runners in the HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby is a pair of runners from the Stavropolskiy Stables – Sbor and Ganibal. Both are trained by Sokolovskiy Y.N but Sbor has been chosen by top jockey Perishkov and has a career record of two wins, three seconds and two third-place finishes in nine starts. Ganibal, who is yet to score this season, comes in with a good reputation having won two, finished second twice and a third place in his five runs in 2008. Pickup, trained by Satapin O.V and to be ridden by Avidzba D.T, has won both his starts this year while another top contender is Westfalia, trained by Kurasov V.V. The grey mare has won three and finished second in the only other start in her short career and will be ridden by Khatkov S.A. Burger, Gagat and Bagrein complete the seven horse field in the HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby, which will be run over a distance of 2,400 metres and is the fourth race of the day. The Abu Dhabi Stakes, with a purse of 1,55,000 Russian Roubles, kick starts the day’s action with nine runners in the fray. The 1600-metre race, open to 3-year-old and above Purebred Arabian horses, is also expected to provide an exciting finish. The 7-year-old Drager, placed 19 times in his 23 starts including six wins, is from Sayapin’s yard with Avidzba as jockey represents the ‘veterans’ while 3-year-old Magistrat, makes his debut for trainer Kappushev M.A. However trainer Sayapin’s Courier, with four wins in 11 starts, could also be in the running while Patrick, trained and ridden by Lavrikov, has been placed eight times in ten starts with four wins and provides a strong challenge. The French-bred Karmel de Faust, a five-year-old son of Akbar, will be starting as one of the favourites with seven wins in 10 starts showing his strong potential. Another French bred runner, Kabara along with Jabara, Pays and Markitan complete the 9-horse field in the Abu Dhabi Stakes. Taleb Dhaher Al Muhairi, Secretary General of the Emirates Equestrian Federation, said: “The HH The President of the UAE Cup (Group 1) Moscow Derby here has now become a much-awaited annual feature in the racing season of Russia. This race has achieved tremendous success in the past few years and Saturday will be another fruit day for Purebred Arabian racing.” He said with the organization of races for Pure-bred Arabian horses in European cities, the Federation’s endeavour to boost the noble breed’s status has gained further strength and the coming season will see the addition of more international venues.
